David Hellerstein, MD is a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, NY. His research focus on psychedelic compounds, including psilocybin and 5MEO-DMT for treatment of depression and other psychiatric disorders, and has appeared in top journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA Psychiatry, Molecular Psychiatry, and elsewhere. His clinical practice focuses on the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders, through psychopharmacology and psychotherapy. His literary writing has been published in numerous magazines and books, including both nonfiction and fiction


His latest book, The Couch, the Clinic, and the Scanner, published in 2023 by Columbia University Press, tells the story of psychiatry's radical transformations over recent decades, from a psychoanalytic model to a model based on the DSM diagnostic manual, and recently to a model based on neuroscience.
